Your Questions About Solar Panel Kits

Sharon asks…

I need help understanding solar panel wiring?

Are there any sites that explain the wiring or where to get the wire or how to hook the wire together. They are making fortunes on the plug and play panels just because they keep the information hidden. It really couldn't be that hard. There are mc4 connectors coming from the solar panel…what do they hook to? I need to get it to hook to the charge controller and then hook the charge controller to my batteries. Any help would be appreciated. Do they happen to have a solar wiring kit, minus the panel for a reasonable price anywhere. If you know anything about this you could make a fortune assembling wiring kits and selling them.
I am trying to hook the solar panels to a charge controller, a charge controller to a battery(not the van battery but a solo stand alone battery that will attach to an inverter) I know the solar panel comes with mc4 connectors…what do those attach to? Is it just to attach other panels? how do I hook the solar panel to the charge controller?

ssadmin answers:

The charge controller should have directions with it. The MC4 connector is just a waterproof male / female connector. Hopefully the manufacturer installed male or female MC4s to the solar panel wires. You would then need to crimp the opposite (male or female) inner metal MC4 fitting to your wire and slip the plastic MC4 housing over the inner metal piece- it should snap into place. Follow directions in Source. The tools look expensive.

How do I make a battery bank for a solar sell?

Okay for Xmas I received a small solar kit and the solar panel has 3 outputs: 1.5V, 3.0V, 4.5V so is there any way for me to make a battery bank for it. And feel free to ask me for more info.
P.S. please no B.S. Thank you.

ssadmin answers:

You could probably charge one or two AA or AAA rechargable batteries with that. Find a NiCd or NiMH battery, and connect the solar cell to it, positive wire to the button on the top of the battery, and negative wire to the bottom. You could just tape it on, or find an actual battery holder with a spring at an electronics store or Radio Shack.

Understand that it will take hours or days to charge, especially in the Winter.

Mandy asks…

What type of power storage system should I get?

I'm getting a 45 W solar panel kit ( http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=90599 ) for a greenhouse. I want to have a small heater in case of freezing temperatures and a few lights. I'm in the Willamette Valley, Oregon.

I wanted to know approximately what kind of batteries and how many I should get.

ssadmin answers:

You just get the standard 12 volt deep cycle marine batteries. Any auto parts store should have them. The problem is that you want to run a heater. When heaters need on average 1500 watts and your charger is only 45 watts. I can't give you specifics on how many batteries you need but its more than one. You should probably try two and see if that works OK for you.

Sandra asks…

can you recommend a way to stay cool in a van on a 45 watt solar system?

i am doing security and stay in my van i have this http://cgi.ebay.com/45-Watt-SolarPanel-Kit-Coupon-Harbor-Freight-SAVE-100-/300558031885?_trksid=p4340.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%252BC%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%26otn%3D10%26pmod%3D250799385600%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D30126080557310998
45 watt solar panel kit mounted on my van. i need to stay cool, i know i can get a 12 volt fan, but is air conditioner possible?

ssadmin answers:

Air conditioner is not possible so better search a gud portable evaporative cooling unit or built it by own way but that also work only in low humidity and put down temp 5-15 degree Celsius only and u need to open window slightly to recirculate air in van

Thomas asks…

Where can I buy a complete solar kit for a home?

Is there companies that sell complete solar kits (solar panels, inverters, regulators etc) but excluding the batteries and excluding installation?
The inverter needs to provide 220V and not 110V (or both) and the company needs to be willing to export.
The inverter needs to be between 5000kva and 7000kva and I need between 2000W and 3000W worth of solar panels.
Thanks.

ssadmin answers:

Places like partsonsale.com have kits, but understand that you will probably want to optimize a kit for each individual install. It is the normal practice not to have batteries, and to wire for 220V, even in the US.

What country is the export to? Might it be more economical to buy separate parts from a distributor?
